Sideline for web studios & dev shops

The website shipped. The requests never will.

Sideline turns the after-launch stream, bug fixes, content swaps, "can you add a page," into a support retainer that runs itself instead of running you.

Support is where studio margins go to die

Every launch creates a client for life, and that should be great news. In practice the requests arrive as emails to whoever built the site, get forwarded twice, and turn into unbilled twenty-minute favors. Nobody scopes them, nobody tracks them, and at the end of the month nobody can say what the support relationship actually cost.

Most studios respond by either turning the small work away, which hands the client relationship to somebody else, or drowning a senior developer in it. There is a third option: treat the request stream as a product. Give it an intake, an owner, a queue, and a number at the end of the month.

That is what Sideline is. It was built inside a working agency for exactly this job, and it has run that agency's post-launch support every day since 2019.

Built for the way support work actually arrives

Every feature below is doing this job for real client work right now.

One developer can carry three clients

Set auto-assignment once per client and every request lands on the right developer the moment it arrives, notified and ready to start. No project manager reads it first, no standup decides who takes it. That routing is what makes small work profitable: the overhead between "client asked" and "developer started" drops to zero.

Support stops being a favor and becomes a revenue line.

Clients can just email, like they always have

You will never train a client out of email, and you should not try. Their message becomes a tracked request with an owner and a status; your inbox stays out of it. They keep their habit, you get a queue.

Clients watch the hours in real time

Their portal shows who worked on what and for how long, as it happens. When a client can see the eleven small things you shipped this month, "what does the retainer even cover?" stops being a conversation.

When Sideline is not the right tool

If the work is one big build, sprints, epics, resource plans, a Gantt chart, run it in your project tool; Sideline is not trying to be Jira or Basecamp. Sideline starts earning its keep the day the project ships and the ongoing requests begin. Most studios run both, and the request half is the half that was broken.

Questions we hear from teams like yours

How do client requests get into Sideline?

Two doors: a custom intake form on your domain that asks for the brief, files, deadline, and priority up front, or plain email. Emailed requests become tracked queue items automatically, so clients who will only ever email are fully supported.

Can clients keep emailing us instead of using a portal?

Yes, and this is deliberate. Email stays the front door for clients who want it; Sideline turns each message into a request with an owner, status, and due date. The portal is there when they want to check status without asking you.

How does auto-assignment work for maintenance clients?

Each client can carry a list of team members who are automatically assigned to every new request from that client. The assignees are notified immediately and can start working, so nothing waits on a project manager to read a thread and delegate.

Can we track time against a monthly support retainer?

Time tracking per request, per person, and per client is built in today, with reports that show what each client consumed in any period. Retainer plans with caps, alerts, and billing are in development now, and founding agencies get input on how they work.

Do our clients see the hours we log?

Yes, if you want them to. The client portal includes a real-time time log in plain terms: who worked on what, for how long. Studios use it to make retainer value visible before the renewal conversation ever starts.

Can we use it with WordPress care plans or website maintenance packages?

That workflow is exactly what Sideline was built inside an agency to run: the stream of content updates, plugin issues, and small fixes that follows every launch. Requests arrive by form or email, get routed to the right developer, and the hours accumulate against the client.

How is this different from a shared inbox like Front or Missive?

A shared inbox organizes conversations; Sideline organizes commitments. Every item has an owner, a status, a priority, and a due date, plus a client portal, time tracking, and reports. You stop reconstructing promises from threads.

How is this different from Jira or a ticketing system?

Engineering ticket tools assume the reporter is technical and the workflow is sprints. Your clients are not filing tickets with reproduction steps. Sideline gives clients a form and a portal a non-technical person actually uses, and gives your team the queue behind it.

Can contractors or freelance developers work in Sideline?

Yes, with their existing email address, no Google Workspace seat or Slack account to provision. Clients never see their personal contact info, and when a contract ends, deactivating them takes one click and is reversible.

What does the AI connector actually let us do?

Sideline exposes a remote MCP server, so Claude, ChatGPT, Claude Code, Make, or Zapier can read your requests, clients, time, and reports and, if an Account Owner allows writes, update status, priority, and due dates or draft replies a human still has to send. Ask questions in plain language, build a morning digest, or pull hours into a report.

Can we bill clients through Sideline?

Retainer management is built in: set up a monthly allowance or a prepaid block of hours per client, with custom rules on each, and logged time draws it down as your team works. Sideline does not issue the invoice itself, so the numbers export into whatever you bill with.

How long does it take to set up?

The trial includes concierge setup: tell us about your studio and we configure your workspace, import clients, and set up your intake form within 24 hours. There is no database to design and nothing for your clients to learn beyond clicking a magic link.

What does it cost as our client list grows?

Studio is $49 per month flat with 5 team seats and unlimited clients and requests, so adding your eleventh or fiftieth maintenance client costs nothing. Extra team seats are $9 per month each.
