Comparison
Sideline vs. ClickUp
Not really competitors, and that's the point. ClickUp is an internal work OS. The question is what happens at the seam where your clients meet your work.
ClickUp is the everything-app
Tasks, docs, whiteboards, goals, dashboards, 15+ views, automations, at $7 to $12/user/mo (annual; $10 to $19 monthly) it's astonishing capability per dollar for internal teams. AI is a separate add-on at $9 to $28/user/mo. There is no client portal: clients enter as "guests," rationed by seat formulas and configured by hand.
Sideline is the client seam
A dedicated request layer between your clients and your work: branded intake, magic-link portal, one queue with exactly three views, AI replies included, $49/mo flat, unlimited clients, ready on day one. Simple enough that clients actually use it.
| Feature | Sideline | ClickUp |
|---|---|---|
| Built for | The client-facing request workflow | Internal team work management |
| Client access | Unlimited clients, magic-link portal, zero setup | Rationed guest seats (a 5-person team gets ~13 on Unlimited, ~30 on Business); unlimited guests are view-only |
| 5-person agency with AI | $49/mo flat, AI included | ≈$140/mo (Business monthly + Brain AI at $9/user) |
| Per-seat price | 5 seats included, +$9/seat | $7 to $12/user/mo annual ($10 to $19 monthly) |
| Setup for client work | Ready day one | Spaces per client, per-item guest permissions, sharing hygiene, a real admin project |
| Team-only discussion | Internal notes, locked, unmistakable | Possible, if your permission tree is configured exactly right |
| Views & feature depth | List, board, calendar, on purpose | 15+ views, docs, whiteboards, goals, automations |
| Time tracking | Built in, all plans: a per-person timer that follows you across devices, filterable reports, CSV export | Basic timer on all plans; timesheets & billable rates need Business |
| AI connector (Claude / ChatGPT / MCP) | Included, one-click OAuth, per-user scoped, no call caps | Official MCP on all plans, but capped at 50 to 300 calls/day without an AI add-on ($9 to $28/user/mo) |
| File storage | 500GB (+$19/mo per 500GB) | Unlimited on paid plans |
| Free plan | No, 14-day trial, no card | Free forever (tight storage & feature caps) |
| Learning curve | Clients need none; teams need minutes | The most-cited complaint in its own reviews |
| Hide your client list & team roster from staff | Agency setting per page: client list, team roster, reports. Client list hidden by default | Guests are limited by default, but members see all public Spaces (Enterprise to restrict); roster hiding not documented |
| Queue ranks itself, with reasons | Smart Focus ranks each person's queue and says why in plain language | "AI Prioritize" fills a priority field from your own prompts; no ranked queue, no explanation (Everything AI, $28/user/mo) |
| AI suggests field updates from the thread | Suggests status, due date, and priority from the conversation; you accept or ignore | AI Fields can write priority, but cannot write status or due date |
| Client-set priority order | Drag in the list or on the board; the order is shared, so clients can set your priorities | Manual sort within a view, per person |

Our honest take
Let's be fair: as an internal work OS, ClickUp is phenomenal value. If your team lives in docs, whiteboards, sprints, and dashboards, nothing at the price competes, and its reviews say the cost is complexity, which teams who love it accept happily.
The problem is the seam. Clients won't learn ClickUp, the guest-seat rationing, the permission labyrinth, the interface built for power users. So agencies configure an elaborate client setup, clients quietly route around it back to email, and the "portal" becomes another internal view. That seam is the entire job Sideline does.
Plenty of agencies run both, happily: ClickUp for internal production, Sideline as the client-facing request layer feeding it. That combo still costs less than ClickUp Business with AI turned on.
Your team can love ClickUp and your clients can still refuse to log into it. The portal decision belongs to your least technical client, choose accordingly.
